CGB-GF. William MOLBY, b. July 4, 1800 (Jonathan 4, Sam.3, Sam.2, Wm.1). He m. in 1823, Losina CLARK (b. 1803) at Baldwinsville, N.Y. There is a Van Buren Township, Onondago Co., N.Y. deed:

     "Lot 12.
      March 8, 1825
William Molby and wife Luoisa) of Camillus Town to Isaac
Jacob Molby and wife Saery ) Wilson of Camillus Town
Chester Molby and wife Sally ) for $325.
      Isaac Molby )

It is not evident to me why William, who was younger brother of Jacob and Chester, should head this list. Is it possible their father, Jonathan, left a larger share of this lot to William? Certainly it seems unusual. (Hist. of Van Buren) "William Malby a tax payer in 1825."

      1 male under 5
      2 males 5 to 10
      1 female 5 to 10.

As nearly as can be ascertained, William Maltby or Molby, with his brother Isaac, moved to Michigan in 1836. The family of William were mostly of Oakland County.

The Hist. of Oakland Co. 1817-1877, compiled by Thaddeus D. Seeley, The Lewis Pub. Co., Chicago and New York, 1912, contains the statement: "In 1836, there was a small class in the vicinity of Clarkston comprised of Azra Crosby and wife, John Merrill and wife and William Malby and wife."

(F.A.M. I believe this was a class called "Sashabaw Class," name for an Indian chief.)

   John, M. 18 Farm Laborer "

(Note by F.A.Molby. Rosa would appear to be the wife of Isaac. John would appear to be John Mulby, who attended school during the year, obviously not a son of Isaac and Rosa, if the age 18 was correctly copied).

Note. It seems very probable that John was a son of William and Lucina. If so, born in 1852.

The 1830 Census. William Maltby, who m. in 1823, was taken only seven years after his marriage, but at this time he had 4 children. The "male under 5" was probably Samuel Hugh, b. in 1828, or age 2 years. Therefore, there must have been 2 sons and a daughter older than Samuel Hugh, of whom we have no record. We can only list such children as we have found by name.

Children of William Molby and Losina Clark:
CGB-GFA. Hiram Maltby, b. Oct. 30, 1823.
CGB-GFb. Julia " b. Aug. 13, 1826.
CGB-GFC. Samuel Hugh Maltby, b. Dec. 17, 1828.
CGB-GFd. Lovina Maltby, b. Oct. 10, 1831.
CGB-GFE. Horace Haynes Maltby, b. June 4, 1834.
CGB-GFF. Isaac Clark " b. Dec. 27, 1839.

(Isaac, b. 1841, may be the following):

"Atlas of Oakland Co., Mich. 1872.
Independence Township. Town 4, north Range 9 E.
         I. Molby. 77.5 acres in S.E. Cor. of Section 18."

"Independence Town Business Notices."

"Isaac Molby. Farmer. District No., 3."

(The map shows "I. Molby, 77.5 acres in District No. 3).

William Malby's grandson, Horace, b. 1849, wrote the compiler: of Pontiac, Mich., and presented to the Michigan Historical Comm., 1924. Vol. 2, p. 202.

"Molby, William, d. May 21, 1875, age 75 yrs."(His grave is in a cemetery near Clarkston).

"Molby, Losina (Lucina), his wife, Dec. 8, 1803 - Feb. 3, 1882."

Copy of Statement signed Mrs. Lucina Molby, dated June 13th, 1879.

                       (From Floyd Lee Maltby)

"James Graves Clark my father was born near the Conn. line and came to the State of New York when a young man, with his brother, both buying farms. ________Wilcox came there from Conn to visit his sister in Pompey, Onondaga Co. They became acquainted and finally married. They lived together until the birth of four children, when she experienced religion, joined the Presbyterian Church and had her children sprinkled. She lived until the twentieth of the next September was taken sick and died. The day that she was buried my elder sister died. My younger brother lived until the next April and died in the village of Auburn, leaving my eldest brother and myself. Two years after my father was married in Auburn to Julia Goodrich of Conn. The fall before my 18th birthday I experienced religion and have ________ to live it from that time to the present. William Molby came from Salem Mass when three years old into our neighborhood and we were married Jan 29th 1823. We moved to Michigan in 1836 with five children who are members of the Methodist Church. One son has since been added to the family. My husband died in Clarkston May 20th 1875.

                                   (signed) Mrs. Lucina Molby"

Mr. Floyd Lee Maltby sent the following copy "unfinished letter in handwriting of Samuel Hugh Maltby, dated Aug. 1, 1916 (Addressee not stated)"

"Munger, August 1, 1916 Mich My Grandfather's name was Jonathan Maltby. He bought the farm in New York st. in 1803 near Baldwinsville. I was talking with your grandpa he said that he had the deed and that was the way it was spelled. Cousin Samuel Maltby - he died when my father was young and he lived a number of years with Unkle Jake Maltby. There was one of Unkle Isaacs boys in Bay City. I will see (page missing)

My father was born in 1800 July 4th and had six children - Hiram Oct 30 1823, Julia 1826, Samuel Hugh 1828, Lovina 1831, Horace 1834, these were born in the State of New York, Isaac 1839 in Michigan. We came to Michigan in 1836. Father died in 1875. Was buried in Clarkston Cemetery Oakland County."

Comment by FA Molby, Baldwin, Kansas. 1955.

The letter signed by Mrs. Lucina Molby indicates that the spelling of the family name was sometimes Molby, sometimes Maltby. Also it indicates that her father married a Miss Wilcox as his 1st wife, and that Lucina's father and mother were natives of Connecticut, who married in Onondaga Co., N.Y.

The letter in the hand of Samuel Hugh Maltby appears to be the first draft of a letter which he wrote to me in 1916. His cousin, Samuel, of whom he speaks, was my grandfather.

William, b. 1800, and his sons, Samuel Hugh and Horace Haynes, spelled their names Maltby, whereas William's oldest son, Hiram's, name in the Adams Genealogy is Hiram Molby. William's brother, Jacob, and his children, seem to have used the spelling Maltby. The "Cousin Samuel" spelled it Molby as his father, Chester, spelled the name. Recorded mortgages and deeds prove that Jonathan came from Salem, N.Y. to Camillus, N.Y. F A M

Letter to D.M.V. from Floyd Lee Maltby (Cornell, 1923)

          201 Hudson St. Ithaca, N. Y.

"My grandfather told me that three Maltby brothers came to American in 1659. He always spoke of them as being young men, so I assume that one of them was the William Maltby (born 1645) that you speak of.

The first of the Maltbys that I have heard about is my grandfather's grandfather, Jonathan Maltby of Baldwinsville, N.Y. Which I believe is the one that you report as marrying a Culver.

His children were Chester, born 1788, Jacob, Isac and William my great grandfather, born July 4th , 1800.

My family knew nothing of Isaac the brother of William. William marrried Lucina Clark and lived at Baldwinsville, N.Y. Date of Marriage--Jan. 29, 1823. Moved to Oakland,Co., Mich. in 1836. William died May 20, 1875, his wife died Feb. 4, 1883.

Their children were: (1) Hiram Maltby born Oct. 30, 1823, married Harriet Adams in 1849, they had two sons, one Charles is living in Chicago, and Edwin Maltby of Dearborn, Mich., and Ellen (Maltby) Clark, Ortonville, Mich. and Jenny (Maltby) Simpson, of Ortonville, Mich.

(2) Julia Maltby, b. Aug. 13, 1826, mar. Alexander Place, their children were: George, Lucy, Sara, Emila, Frank now living at Ortonville, Mich., and Adea.

(3) Samuel Hugh Maltby, born Dec. 17, 1828. Married Elizabeth Young, Sept. 8, 1852. Both children by first wife died while young. Second wife Elmira Blodgett married Feb. 19, 1857; Elmira Blodgett born Feb. 5, 1838. Their children: Huldah Janett, born Dec. 17, 1859, married John Young; had children, Claude, Howard, Clyde Young of Orchard Lake, Mich. and Maude. Huldah Janett now dead.

Second child of Samuel Hugh Maltby, Wilber George Maltby, born Dec. 17, 1864; died Feb. 1, 1901, married Nina E. Caldwell, June 2, 1899. Have one child--Margret Winifred of Victoria, Ontario.

Third child Horace Liman Maltby, born Aug. 3, 1868; married Hattie B. Box of Dryden, Mich. April 10, 1890. Reside at 201 Hudson Street. Ithaca, N.Y. Have one child. Floyd Lee Maltby, born Oct. 3, 1895.

(4) Lovina Maltby born Oct. 10, 1831. Died Feb. 6, 1914. Married Charles W. Smith Jan. 7, 1852. Children Ada, born Apr. 15, 1855; William, b. Aug. 5, 1858; Ida, b. Nov. 2, 1861; Bert, b. Aug. 10, 1872; May, b. Dec. 4, 1868.

(5) Horace Haynes Maltby of Davisburg, Mich., born June 4, 1834. Married Lucy Ogden, April 10, 1859. Have children: Mary Annetta, b. May 15, 1860, and Sarah Emila Maltby b. June 4, 1878, who died Dec. 1920.

(6) Isaac Clark Maltby, b. Dec. 27, 1839. Married Rose Ann Black. He went to Kansas when a young man and nothing further was heard of him.

As to the Isaac Maltby who went to Port Huron, Mich., I can tell nothing except that I have heard my Grandfather speak of him.

There are quite a lot of Maltbys in Michigan. Many of them live around Hillsdale, Mich. One was a lumberman and the place of the camp is named Maltby, Mich. There is a Maltby family in Cortland, N.Y.; they could be reached, without street address. . . .

                      Yours Very Truly
